Transcending the confines of any one signature style, Moon Owl’s Mages bends genres to keep their creativity alive and unpredictable. From their debut Skelly Bones & the Flaming Crown to their fuzz-drenched followup Kill The Crackle, and now their funkier, jammier Step On It!, the band continues to evolve while leaving a deepening mark on the Boise psych-rock scene. Their origin began as a challenge between friends—to write, record, and release a full LP in just two weeks—resulting in Skelly Bones Jones (2020), a concept album about a skeleton protagonist on a journey through strange lands. They kept that DIY ethos and spontaneous production as the band set their course. Following a lineup evolution, Kill The Crackle (2022) brought a more refined, detailed sound while keeping the psychedelic. Opening for heavy hitters like Ty Segall, SLIFT, Frankie & the Witch Fingers, and Spoonbenders, they earned a reputation for neck-snapping performances across the west coast. The band made a sonic left turn with the release of Step On It! (2025), injecting a heavy dose of funk and groove into their discography. Embracing syncopation and swagger, the LP showcased a new side of the Mages—stranger, more experimental, and weirder in all the right ways.
